Georgia mixed-media artist Lori Lejeune is known for her uplifting “Flight” series and her signature, constellation-style wall installations.
Artist: Born and raised in New Orleans, LA, Lejeune’s drawings and creativity were encouraged by her school teachers. It paid off early. In fourth grade, Lejeune won $20 for a poster she drew.
After graduating with a BA from the University of Texas at Austin, Lejeune pursued her fine arts interests and worked as a graphics artist, flash animator, web designer and email marketer.
For the past 20 years, Lejeune has lived in Decatur, GA, where she works full-time from her home studio.
In the beginning: In high school, Lejeune began blending her creative bent with technology. Although she mainly created representational artwork with traditional media early in her career, ultimately she began incorporating digital elements into her artwork.
Art & materials: Primarily mixed media and cross-disciplinary art, which combines digital elements with paint and traditional fine art techniques on canvas or other surfaces.
- Small works on paper and fine art prints ($100 and up).
- Works on canvas ($950 and up).
- Custom wall installations, which often feature multiple, smaller round works of various sizes. ($6,000 to $30,000).
Many viewers say the patterns in her work remind them of a constellation, said Lejeune.
- Public artwork (depends on the site). Two of her outdoor public art installations featuring her well-known Flight series have been funded by the Decatur Arts Alliance (2021) and City of Dunwoody (2023).
Recurring theme: Overcoming. Her Flight series features the imagery of birds and other winged creatures overcoming gravity through flight.
“The series stands for overcoming the forces in life that weigh us down,” said Lejeune. “Offering an uplifting message of transcending adversity.”
Favorite or must-have tools: Paint pens for signing artwork because of the permanence and extra fine detail.
“Some paint pens have trouble with the point becoming clogged,” said Lejeune. “But I’ve had good luck with Artistro brand paint pens.”
Inspirations:
- Visits to art museums and gardens.
- Artists such as Andy Warhol and Rene Magritte who created design and advertising work along with their fine art.
What’s new: Working on a large, 18-foot-long wall installation commission for a collector’s home in Tennessee.
The collector is a water sign and loves water, said Lejeune. The installation is composed of 50 textured round canvases arranged into the shape of an ocean wave.
Recent exhibit: Solo exhibit in early 2025 at the Hyatt Cottage gallery in Decatur’s Legacy Park.
What’s new or next: Working on a new series of cyanotypes.
“Much of my work features subject matter from the natural world which I render in white on a dark background,” said Lejeune.
“Cyanotypes also have a dark background,” she added. “So working with the medium feels like a natural extension of my current body of work.”
