Georgia’s Mitchell Biggio utilizes digital and traditional techniques with simple materials to produce his visually clean and modular wall sculpture.
Artist: Growing up in Marblehead, MA, Biggio was always interested in art and building things. In high school, he wanted to be an architect. Biggio started at the Savannah College of Art and Design as an architecture major, but made a switch. He graduated with a BFA in sculpture in 2015.
Studio: Mitchell Biggio works out of his home studio in Decatur, GA.
In the beginning: After college, he worked as a fabricator at a hospitality art company and later as an assistant for a few Atlanta-based artists. He worked on projects ranging from hanging art in private collections to managing large public art installations. He became a full time artist in 2023.
Art & materials: Mainly 3-D wall sculpture using wood, wood veneer and sheet materials ($500 to $7,000), which offer versatility.
However, lately Biggio has enjoyed working with plaster in both free-form construction and mold making. His preferred medium for his 2-D work is acrylic – sprayed or brushed on panel.
What’s popular: “Ramps and Planes,” a current series, which explores landscape and architectural elements to depict shifting topographic “moments” in which events, memories and emotions are solidified, said Biggio.
Favorite tools:
- 3-D modeling software.
“It allows me to work on ideas in three dimension with little commitment to time, material cost or scale,” said Biggio.
- An adjustable work bench that has many tailored functions, including a wooden scissor lift mechanism that adjusts the table’s height for different works.
Inspirations: Shifts in time and landscapes and how it affects our actions and experiences.
