For Melissa Callaway, every flower tells a story.
The South Carolina multidisciplinary artist creates dreamy gardens of ink botanicals and handmade blooms that explore both the beauty of nature and the complexities of human emotion.
“When I paint a plant, I’m making a portrait,” Callaway said. “I’m drawn to its stoicism, beauty, tenacity, and resilience — qualities I find difficult to hold onto myself.”
Artist: Born and raised: Kansas City, Missouri, Callaway graduated with a BFA in textiles (fibers) from the Kansas City Art Institute.
She also earned an MA in art psychotherapy from Roehampton University in London, where she lived for seven years. While in London, Callaway practiced art therapy, met her husband and had the first of her three children.
Nearly 10 years ago, she and her family moved to Charleston, where they have family and friends.
