The Georgia husband and wife art-making team, known as Yvonne and Stefan, take found vintage materials, such as maps, photos and sheet music, and turn them into fresh new compositions and layered collages.
Artists:
- Yvonne Miller: Born and raised in Atlanta, Miller studied drawing and painting at Georgia State University. In 2003, she started sharing her work at art festivals.
- Stefan Hochhuber: Born and raised in Augsburg, Germany, he loved drawing as a child. But he was encouraged to follow a more “practical” path.
An aeronautical engineer by trade, Hochhuber initially planned to continue his career in the States. While job hunting, he joined Miller on the road – and discovered a new passion.
“We soon realized that our individual skill set complimented each other more than we had imagined,” said Miller.
Since 2015, they have made a life together on the road, crisscrossing the country with their rebuilt 1968 Lil’ Hobo camper in tow, selling their artwork at festivals.
Studio: Each artist has a dedicated creative space at their home in Decatur, GA: Miller’s studio is on the first floor. Hochhuber is nestled in his space in the backyard.
Art & materials: Mixed-media collages on wood panel, using hand-cut papers from old magazines, photos, maps and fabrics gathered on their travels.
The layered materials are combined with acrylic paint and metallic leafing and framed ($125 to $15,000.)
The subjects of the collages vary from nests to a classic piece of clothing to whimsical representations and renderings of nature, plant-life, celestial beings and animals.
What’s popular: Custom bird-like nests created with a client’s personal and meaningful items, including photos, letters, wedding invitations and children’s drawings.
Special commission: “Over the course of a year, we had the honor of sitting with a grieving couple as they slowly gathered the fragments of their son’s life,” said Miller. “Through our many meetings, we listened to the stories behind each keepsake, learning who he was through their eyes.
“Together we wove these memories into a commemorative nest: a dedicated space where his life’s most meaningful items now rest, offering a daily connection and remembrance.”
