New Orleans artist Brett Henderson uses depth in his colorful and layered abstract paintings.
Artist: The Oklahoma City native grew up drawing and painting. In 2002, he moved to New Orleans, to study film at the University of New Orleans. It took a few years to realize he wasn’t happy working on the other people’s projects and decided to concentrate on his painting
Company/studio: Henderson Gallery, which opened in 2022, serves as both a gallery and the artist’s studio space in the French Quarter, New Orleans oldest neighborhood.
Materials: Layered, colorful paintings using acrylic paint and oil pigments on three to four layers of acrylic sheets, which create a desired depth.
What’s popular: Silhouette portraiture paintings ($750 to $2,500).
Other favorites: Large-scale abstract works ($2,500 to $10,000).
Recent project: Vibrant 4-foot-by-8-foot maximalist painting for a private collection in Philadelphia.
Inspirations:
- Anything in nature, specifically coral. Even petri dishes of spores, bacteria and molds.
- Artists, including: Alphonse Mucha, Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, David Hockney, Yayoi Kusama, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Roy Lichtenstein and Hilma af Klint.
