In Charlotte, Bailey Schmidt paints floral vases and tablescapes that are colorful, whimsical and graphic. The artist: Born in Michigan, Schmidt grew up in Charlotte, NC. Always artistic, she took classes over the years and started to pursue an art degree at college, but found it wasn’t the right fit. Schmidt moved around in her 20s to Austin, then to the UK to be with her British husband, before returning to Austin. Last year, they moved to Charlotte. The studio: The couple converted their garage into a light-filled studio for Schmidt. In the beginning: After following a few printmakers on Instagram, Schmidt thought she would pick printmaking up as a hobby to pass the time. In the UK, she made a website, sold at a few markets and grew a social media following. After moving back to Austin, she picked up painting. A local gallery contacted her to ask if it could license a few of her digital illustrations, and if she could turn her digital illustrations into paintings. She has been painting ever since. The art & materials: Acrylic paintings on canvas of colorful floral pieces and tablescapes. The process: Every piece starts on her iPad. Then she sketches her ideas in pretty full detail before she paints them on canvas. What’s popular: Floral vases ($950 to $3,000), which have become her signature. Other favorites: Lately, tablescapes ($1,200 to $3,500), because everyone has a favorite food or event memory. Two of her personal favorites are “Down by the River” and “Crawfish Boil”. |

Fun commission: A tiki-themed tablescape. “I was thrilled at the idea of painting some novelty tiki cups.”
