North Carolina’s Angelique Tassistro makes festive dishes with fresh colors and designs that make everyday meals feel like a celebration.
The artist: Tassistro grew up in Baton Rouge, LA, and received two BFA’s from Louisiana State University: One in photography, the other in ceramics. She moved to Asheville in 2003 to pursue ceramics.
The company/studio: Angelique Tassistro Ceramics, based in Asheville, shares work and gallery space with four other artists at Curve Studios in the city’s popular River Arts District.
The art & materials: Small batch, handmade, brightly colored functional ceramics, including bowls, plates and platters. The artist uses white earthenware clay from Highwater Clays in Asheville. Her underglazes are mostly from the Amaco velvet series, though she is known to mix her own colors.
What’s popular:
- The “happy” orange color pallet of dishware.
- Platters and serving bowls, particularly the scalloped serving bowl ($120), which she can’t keep in stock.
Other favorites: Small dipping bowls ($55 each), with several different edges, make great gifts.
