Georgia-based artist Crystian Hopper uses colored pencils in his photorealistic drawings.
Company/studio: Crystian Hopper Art, which started in 2018, is based in Atlanta. The artist has an in-home studio.
Artist: Born in Auburn, AL, Hopper grew up in Niceville, FL, where he enjoyed drawing, particularly portraits and superhero sketches, throughout his school years.
At the University of Mobile, Hopper planned to pursue mechanical engineering, but soon decided engineering wasn’t what he wanted to do.
In 2018, he graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Atlanta, where he majored in sequential art (comic book art) with a minor in drawing.
Art & materials: Hyper-realistic drawings on paper with colored pencils ($300 to $8,000).
Favorite tools: Colored pencils, particularly the Caran d’ache Luminance series, Faber castell Polychromos and Prismacolor Premier.
Inspirations:
- Pop art, with white backgrounds and bright vivid colors.
- Comic book artwork.
- Artists, including Chin-Cheng Hung and CJ Hendry.
Fun or special commissions:
- A simple portrait of a friend and his wife with some drinks on vacation (see photo at bottom right). Their happy faces make the picture, said Hopper, And the colors pop off the white background so well.
- A drawing for another friend of an older gentleman sitting outside surrounded by some chickens. “It has a vintage style to it, unlike a lot of the drawings I do.”
Recent honor: One of his drawings was selected as the title piece for the “Metro Montage XXIII” exhibition at the Marietta Cobb Museum of Art in Marietta, GA. Hopper also has a second piece in the annual juried exhibit, which runs through Sept. 3.
Recent project: A lollipop.
Current project: A pair of men’s tan dress shoes.
