In her functional and sculptural ceramic designs, Maryland’s Christine Goh draws from nature, including the changing light of the seasons and the color palettes of her daily surroundings.
Artist: Born and raised in Singapore, Goh received a BFA and Bachelor of Architecture from the National University of Singapore. Having lived and worked in Tokyo, Boston and Bangkok, she is now based in Bethesda, MD
Company/studio: Clay Elements was launched in March 2017. Goh has participated in craft shows including American Craft Made Baltimore, Craft + Design and the James Renwick Alliance’s JRA Day.She divides her time between her home studio and Glen Echo Pottery.
In the beginning: Making art and things has always been a part of her life. While working in architecture in Tokyo, Goh admired contemporary and traditional pottery in museums and galleries, and felt drawn to the craft.
Goh began her journey in clay at Kasumi Katagiri’s pottery studio in Bangkok. When she moved to Maryland, Goh joined the Glen Echo Pottery community.
Art & materials: Sculptural and functional vessels in stoneware and porcelain.
Her stoneware and porcelain forms are wheel thrown, altered and assembled components. They are canvases for mono printing and mark makingin calligraphic brushwork with layers of colored slips, stains, oxides and glazes.
The vessels are high temperature reduction fired, soda fired or oxidation fired.
