Atlanta-based painter Charles Keiger creates a world that is both familiar, with real-world elements, and surreal.
Artist: Born in Asheville, NC, Keiger mostly grew up in Rock Hill, SC. He earned a BFA from the University of South Carolina and an MFA from the University of Georgia, where he decided to go after reading a review of the B52’s first album in Rolling Stone.
“It seemed like a cool place,” said Keiger.
Studio: In 1982, after receiving his MFA, Keiger moved to Atlanta and rented warehouse/studio space for 16 years. Since 1998, he has worked in a studio he built in the back yard of his Grant Park home,
In the beginning: Like most artists, he has been drawing and painting his whole life. At age 16, Keiger sold a drawing for $50 from a group show he had entered – and was hooked.
Art & materials: Oil on canvas and watercolor on paper. The watercolors are where he works out ideas for the canvas paintings.
Watercolors and small paintings ($2,000). Large paintings (up to $12,000).
Keiger’s work has been described as “magical realism.” It is a term he likes.
Popular: The Falcons (birds) in flight, are images that have resonated with the clients.
Inspiration/influences:
- Surrealist painters, especially Magritte who had an impact on his style from the start.
- A book, featuring the paintings of Salvador Dali, he got as a teen.
As an artist, he can be watching a movie, taking a walk or looking at paintings, anything really, said Keiger, and if he is open, he will notice something he can file away for future use.
“We (artists) are great thieves,” said Keiger.
Fun or special commission: The Graduate Hotel in Nashville made a print of one of his paintings to decorate its Dolly Parton themed rooms.
