Atlanta-based Skylar Morgan Furniture blends natural and reclaimed materials to produce what it calls “American Made Modern” furniture.
The founder: A Montana native, Skylar Morgan worked as an apprentice to master furniture maker Jeffrey Greene in Doylestown, Pa, for more than two years. In 2002, Morgan moved to Atlanta and opened his West Midtown design studio before expanding into furniture manufacturing.
The company & goods: In its Westside studio, Skylar Morgan Furniture designs and builds modern, hard-working furnishings and architectural woodwork for homes and commercial spaces, ranging from restaurants and retail spots to bars and boutiques.
Materials: Reclaimed woods with natural finishes teamed with metals, like brass and steel, glass, leather and stone.
What’s popular: Arc stool ($1,200 and one of Morgan’s favorite pieces); Heron stool ($1,000); Arciform credenza ($8,500); and Twirl side table ($950, plus).
Other favorites: Arciform Collection, features credenzas, coffee tables and lounge chairs. The collection also offers a sideboard inspired by old record player cabinets with patterned wood detail. The detail give a vintage feel to otherwise modern design.
Unusual requests: Worked with a team at Atlanta’s Piedmont Hospital to assess which trees could be removed from the property and repurposed for furniture and other items for the hospital’s new cardiac building.
The company will produce indoor and outdoor benches, desk tops, planters, plus shelving for the gift shop and lobby area.
Awards: Metropolis magazine’s 2018 award for the Arc stool. Also a winner in Garden & Gun magazine’s 2018 “Made in the South” awards for its comfy and stylish Arciform sofa.
What’s new: A collaboration with Atlanta-based Summerour Architects on a private residence at Blackberry Farm, a resort in east Tennessee.
It provided custom furniture and other pieces from its collection, including a shelter-style bed with a leather and steel wrapped headboard, a custom desk, and a Y steel coffee and side table.
Also designed and produced custom outdoor rocking chairs.
What’s next: Launching a new collection of tables and seating this year.
