Texas-based artist William Hall utilizes sand, grout, mortar and acid stains to produce his abstract cast wall reliefs.
Artist: Born in Bartlesville, OK, Hall moved to Dallas in 1963. After graduating with a BA of fine arts from the University of Texas at Arlington, he became one of the founding members of 500 Exposition Gallery in Dallas. He has been a full-time artist for more than 40 years.
Studio: Hall’s studio, “The Creative Force,” was established in 1980. He has studio space and personal gallery in his home in Cedar Hill.
Art & materials: Extremely textured, abstract cast wall reliefs using grout, plaster, sand and cement.
“I developed my process (over the past two decades) after falling in love with these mediums during the construction of our home in 2001,” said Hall.
What’s popular: Larger works, 45-inches by 50-inches or larger, ($3,500 to $10,000.

Process:
- Sculpts in various formulas of wax to produce a mold into which he pours pigmented grout and/or mortar.
- After the work has hardened, it is removed from the mold, acid stained and polished.
- Finally, the mold is destroyed in the process ensuring a one of a kind, unique work of art.
Favorite tools: Trowels, hand-made gouges, kitchen utensils, heat guns and whatever else suits his purpose at the time.

- Beauty in nature, such as fossils, sedimentary stone, the structure and patterns of plant life.
- That chance and serendipity are responsible for the structure and order of our world and for the organized beauty therein.
Awards/honors: Many over the years, including these favorites:
- Received a fellowship from “Peripheral Vision Arts.”
- Had his work featured on the “Jumbotron” in Time Square during “Art Takes Time Square.”
- In 1986 his art was selected in a statewide competition to appear on nine million Texas Southwestern Bell directory covers.
