Virginia’s Kiki Slaughter pours, scrapes and layers paint on canvas to create her bold, richly textured abstract works.
The artist: The Virginia native grew up in Charlottesville with a love of art. She earned art degrees from the University of Virginia (UVA) and Sotheby’s Institute in London. In 2005, after college, she started painting professionally. Slaughter lives and works in Richmond.
The goods & materials: Abstract paintings, usually oils and acrylics on linen or canvas. Through collaborations, she also has created wallpaper, upholstery and jewelry.
What’s popular: Medium to large paintings ($4,000 to $7,000).

Inspiration: The very act of painting. Composing layers of color until they become a work of art. Also the landscapes of her hometown, Charlottesville.
Fun requests: Design headboards for guest rooms at the Quirk Hotel in Charlottesville.
Big break: Was named a Southern tastemaker by Garden & Gun magazine early in her career. “It was huge honor and helped get my name out there.”
What’s next: Another collaboration, which will debut next spring, for a hotel in Virginia. Also a show at Hidell Brooks Gallery in Charlotte next fall.
